Are aboveground storage facilities better than underground? Depending on where the facility is being constructed will quite offen decide the type of facility. For example the Jackson Hole Wyoming Airport can only Install underground fuel storage tanks because the airport is on national park Land. Because of aesthetics the national park service does not allow above-ground storage facilities at this location. Other factors in deciding the type of facility would be for example if you were in a high water table area it may be more cost effective to go with an aboveground system to eliminate or minimize dewatering costs. If you have a small space in which to construct aboveground may be the only choice. Due to safety issues when excavating an area to bury tanks you have to create an area not only big enough for the tanks but also slope the banks per OSHA standards. In affect you over dig which creates a lot of extra soil to move and stock pile. Are tanks used at retail fuel facilities the same as those used in aviation? No for a number of reasons there is no comparision between the two. For example A tank either AST or UST for the use of storing jet fuel is suppose to be internally coated with a light colored epoxy coating. This is not required in retail. Aviation fuel storage tanks should be equipped with a low point sump or a thief pump. This is something you would not find at a retail facility. All aviation fuel storage tanks should be equipped with manways to facilitate interior inspections. This is not a required in the retail. Aviation fuel storage tanks are equipped with a floating suction. Not required in the retail. Can I use a hydraulic hose to dispense fuel to my aircraft? No all hoses used in the transfer of aviation fuels to the aircraft or to a refueler Truck are suppose to be certified aircraft fuel hoses meeting the requirements of API-1529 and NFPA-407. In addition this hose will also come with a certificate that conforms with industry standards. Because I have an electronic automatic tank gauge can I do without a low point tank drain or thief pump. No all industry standards and codes require that an aviation fuel storage tank be equipped low point sump or thief pump. Without this you cannot easily remove accumulated water or check the tank bottom for bottom sediment & water BS&W. |
